TRAI announces open-house for DTH players

DTH players and stakeholders can now directly voice their opinions and viewpoints to India’s regulatory body, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on December 10. TRAI has announced an open house for DTH players to gauge their take on the renewal of DTH licences.
TRAI has been soliciting the opinion of DTH players for several weeks now as it tries to come out with new policies regarding DTH licences. In November, it released a supplementary consultation paper that dealt with the very same issue. At that time it had asked DTH players and stakeholders to send across their ideas online or through offline methods to the TRAI office. The stakeholders had been given till November 25th to voice their views. Now TRAI has announced that it wants to hear personally from the involved parties.
All of the DTH players have already announced that they want the validity period of the DTH licences to be increased substantially. Previously a DTH licence was valid for 10 years. However now Reliance Digital TV, Sun Direct and Airtel Digital TV have said that they would prefer it for licences to be valid for a duration of 20 years. Videocon d2h and Dish TV in the meantime have asked for at least 15 years validity of licences.
