India´s Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry is making efforts to speed up the digitization process in the country. The Ministry has initiated discussions with MSOs for rolling out of DAS mandate in Phase III towns. Phase III comprises of moffusil towns is supposed to complete digitization process by September 2014.
Ministry estimates that 77 million STBs would be required to digitize India´s Phase III and IV TV viewing homes. Government is encouraging domestic manufacturers for in house STB production. Domestic STB manufacturing opportunity has been identified as a growth driver for electronic manufacturing industry wherein the demand for STBs is valued around USD 12 billion globally.
The government is in discussions with MSOs regarding chip installation in STBs to record real time viewership of data. There are also initiatives taken to ensure that a credible TV audience measurement system is in place and hence the ratings are not tailored to suite advertiser´s interest but are fair and transparent.
