Joint initiative for German DVB-T2 rollout

DVB-T2 HDGerman public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, commercial broadcasters RTL and ProSiebenSat.1, the commercial broadcasters’ industry association VPRT and the media authorities have set up a joint initiative for the introduction of the new digital terrestrial TV distribution system DVB-T2/HEVC through which HD channels will be transmitted terrestrially in Germany for the first time.
To give viewers orientation, the initiative has created the DVB-T2 HD logo indicating which devices are suitable for reception. They will be compliant with the minimum technical specifications set by industry association Deutsche TV-Plattform.
A joint project office by the six partners will accompany the transition from the current DVB-T standard to the successor system with information campaigns. A website carrying further information can be found at www.dvb-t2hd.de.
The DVB-T2 rollout will commence in mid-2016 in the first urban areas and is to be completed nationwide by mid-2019. Currently, around one in ten German households uses DTT which was introduced in 2002.
