About five million subsidy coupons have been used in Thailand for the purchase of basic or hybrid set-top boxes, says the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).
Thailand has seen acceleration in the number of people who are switching to digital television. NBTC has so far issued 14 million coupons, each worth 690 baht (~$20). These subsidy coupons have been distributed to help the socio-economically disadvantaged population of the country access digital terrestrial television broadcasting.
NBTC had earlier said that the digital TV subsidy scheme will speed up the TV digitisation in Thailand. In October 2015, the regulator had announced that it has approved a plan to add 2.8 million households to those eligible for digital TV vouchers.
Thailand has around 6.6 million Pay TV users, of which 330,000 are digital satellite HD subscribers. Direct basic cable Tv customers make up for 5.5 million digital TV users, according to Dataxis research.
