Philippines to adopt the Japanese model for digital TV

When Philippines transitions to digital terrestrial television, it might end up adopting the Japanese model of digital TV. The president of Philippines, Benigno Aquino III has confirmed that he’s already discussed the matter along with Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, at the sidelines of the Asean summit.
Benigno Aquino III said one of the reasons the country is contemplating the Japanese model is due to Japan’s ability to continue broadcasting during emergencies. As Philippines is also visited upon by natural disasters, following Japan’s example would be prudent, said the president. He said, “There’s a last step that the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has to do which is to hold a hearing among the stakeholders who were actually the proponents. So maybe we are migrating to the Japanese digital standards—that’s one thing we discussed.”
In January of this year, the NTC approved the adoption of Integrated Service Digital Broadcasting Terrestrial (ISDB-T) standard for their DTT services. ISDB-T is a Japanese standard which was selected over other cheaper formats like DVB-T2.
