Malaysia has planned to distribute over two million digital television set-top-boxes for free to lower economic sections of the society, as it gears up switch over to digital television broadcast. As per a few media reports, Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Communications and Multimedia Minister has officially confirmed this decision at a press meet.
Recipients of the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) and e-Kasih poverty-eradication programmes are entitled to receive the financial assistance for the STBes, said the minister. The country expects to completely transition to digital broadcasts between 2018 and 2020.
The country will commence digital TV transmission tests by the end of this month via the transmitting stations in Bukit Pelindung, Kuantan, in Pahang; Bukit Besar in Terengganu and Machang in Kelantan. In the end of 2016, Malaysia is likely to complete the installation of digital infrastructure.
The country has planned to migrate to DTT in three phases – phase I is scheduled for completion in 2015, phase II migration is planned from 2016 to 2020 and phase III is scheduled for completion in 2020 which will witness 100% DTT service. It is likely to switch off analogue signals in 2017 but the transition will be completed after the full-out of the digital platform.
