Airtel Digital TV has planned to add nearly 23 channels in high definition format by this year. The company has planned to increase its HD channels from 27 to 50 HD, reported the Hindu Business Line. It will also add 12 other channels to its channel line-up shortly.
The multi-system operator has intended to procure indigenous set-top-boxes at affordable rates. Indigenous STB manufacturers in India had expressed concern that they had not received orders from MSOs despite government’s initiative to boost local manufacturing – this Airtel Digital TV’s intent is likely to bring cheer to Indian indigenous STB manufacturers.
“One of the key priorities for us is to ensure that we get STBs at competitive rates. The Indian consumer is not willing to pay beyond INR1,500-1,600 for a set-top-box. If we get competitively priced STBs within India, we will look at it,” said Shashi Arora, CEO of Airtel Digital TV to the media firm.
