Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, is expected to generate a revenue of USD 500-600 million by operating the country’s first communications satellite, Azerspace-1, according to a report. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Communications and High Technologies has reported that the satellite currently broadcasts 81 television channels and 16 radio channels.
“Azerspace-1 attracts a great interest in the world which is why the number of transmitted TV channels is growing every day,” said the ministry in a statement which was posted on its official website.
The satellite which was launched in February 2013 while the commercial activity was started in May. Azerspace 1 covers Europe, Africa, Caucasus region and Middle East and Central Asia.
Around 80% of the satellite’s capacity is available for commercial purposes. It currently hosts broadcasts from Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine, Lebanon and South Africa – with Iraqi and Afghan networks also reportedly interested in using the satellite.
