India to speed up digitisation

With the ongoing digitisation drive taking place in India, the Indian government plans on speeding up the process even further when it comes to Phase III and Phase IV of digitisation, which will cover primarily tier-2 towns and rural areas in the country.
Bimal Julka, the secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, has told TRAI as well as teams at I&B to ensure the final phases of digitisation go according to the deadlines that have been set. MSOs have also been told to prepare for Phase III and Phase IV immediately. The state will also be setting up new deadlines for the importing of STBs.
Even as the country looks ahead, Kolkata, the metro city part of Phase I, has been struggling with digitisation. It saw 0.18 million homes facing cable blackouts on August 23. The government has also stated that the country will need 77 million STBs to successfully complete digitisation. The current deadline for the digitisation drive sits at December 2014 for whole of India.
