Netflix attracts suspicion in Russia

Russian pay-TV operators are viewing the rececent arrival of Netflix in the country with suspicion.
Kommersant reports that in a roundtable discussion at CSTB 2016 in Moscow, some participants called for the service to be ‘Russified’. Given the devaluation of the ruble, Netflix would find the cost of Russian content relatrively inexpensive.
Significantly, some also called for there to be a level playing field between Russian and foreign players, requiring the latter to pay taxes, including VAT.
Mixed views were also expressed as to whether the online video market in Russia would benefit from the tightening of legal regulation.
