Digital satellite television subscriptions in Sri Lanka registered an estimated year-on- year growth of 42.3 % for the period that ended March, 2015, according to latest update from Dataxis Intelligence service.
Pay TV market is still growing in Sri Lanka with total subscriber base showing q-o-q growth of 9.4%; from 662,600 in Q4/2014 to an estimated 724,700 subscribers at end of March, 2015. Year-on-year increase was at 37.9%. Total number of digital TV satellite subscriber base in the country was at around 506,700, with Axiata’s Dialog providing digital TV services to 504,000 subscribers as of 1Q’15.
Sri Lanka had 31,000 digital cable Pay TV subscribers, an increase of 40.9% y-o-y as of March,2015. Direct basic cable subscriber base was at 86,000; y-o-y growth of 17.8%. Sri Lanka Telecom-owned internet Protocol Television service called PEO TV currently has 132,000 subscribers. The telecom company is controlled by the Government of Sri Lanka.
Essel Group-owned Indian DTH company, Dish TV, recently launched its services in Sri Lanka. The Indian operator holds 70% of Dish TV Lanka while local company Satnet holds the remaining stake. According to Dataxis Research, total Pay TV subscribers are expected to increase from 961,000 in 2015 to 1.45 million by the year 2018.
