The pay-TV market is booming across the Asia Pacific region with the addition of 36.74 million subscribers (7.3% growth) in the 12 months to end-March, 2015, according to the latest research from Dataxis.
End 1Q15 there were 537.6 million pay-TV subs across the region, with IPTV growing 21.3% to 56.75 million, followed by DTH with 16.2% growth to 78.93 million, cable television up 4% to 396.58 million, while pay-DTT subscriptions rose just 0.2% to 3.85 million. Although the overall cable growth was minimal, digital cable was up 12.2% to 260.81 million, while analog fell from 147.57 million in 1Q14 to 134.95 million in 1Q15.
The largest pay-TV markets across APAC in terms of subscriptions end 1Q15 were China with 267.4 million, India (145.59 million), South Korea (27.59 million), Japan (22.89 million), Pakistan (13.49 million) and Vietnam (10.18 million).
Free-to-Air (FTA) DTH households are expected to grow from 84.28 million in 2014 to 111.03 million in 2018, while FTA DTT households are forecasted to ascend from 190.69 million to 203.31 million over the same period. At the end of March 2015, there were over 119.16 million FTA DTT and 42.43 million FTA DTH households respectively.
Japan has a large FTA DTT base with over 108 million households end March, followed by Australia with 8.25 million and Hong Kong with 1.60 million. The largest FTA DTH markets in APAC were China with 19 million, Thailand with 15.21 million and India with 6.05 million. According to Dataxis, total free-to-air TV revenues from private TV advertising and public TV funding is forecast to rise from USD14.7 billion in 2014 to USD18.1 billion in 2018.
