Thailand’s broadcasting regulator, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) announced that 30 DTT channels will be aired starting from December 5, 2013. Among the channels , 24 would be assigned for commercial purpose and 6 for public services. The final fees to be paid by each network will be announced by NBTC by next month. NBTC has officially granted four licences for the digital TV network providers namely, the Public Relations Department(PRD), MCOT,the Royal Thai Army and Thai Public Broadcasting Service(Thai PBS).
The spectrum auction for the commercial digital channels will be held in October and the NBTC also announced that the first public licence would be given to the Parliament House. It is noted that the network leasing fees would only be finalized after the broadcasting committee has gone through investment plans by the operators to ensure the affordability.
By September, distributors and manufacturers of digital TV STBs will also be given the go-ahead to start stocking the products for sale to the public. In order to publicise the matter further, NBTC has also come up with a new mascot, Nong Do Dee, to educate the public on the latest developments regarding the communication world in the country.
