The number of DTH satellite households in Austria has grown in the past year from 2.05 million (2014) to 2.12 million households.
Cable television faced a decline from 1.17 million to 1.12 million households. The number of IPTV households (0.19 million) and DTT households (0.14 million) remain unchanged.
DTH satellite reception is market leader with a share of 60% of TV households, followed by cable (31%), IPTV (5%) and DTT (4%).
The figures are taken from the Astra TV-Monitor 2015 published by Astra satellite operator SES for which market research institute GfK Austria interviewed 2,000 households across Austria. The focus was on the TV reception method of the main TV set, usually the large flat-screen in the living room.
From the total of 3.57 million TV households in Austria, 2.44 million (68%) receive HD channels, an increase by 8% compared with 2014 (2.26 million). Satellite households lead the way: 1.61 million (76%) had HD reception equipment at the end of 2015 (2014: 1.48 million). More than 100 HD channels are available via Astra (19.2° East) to Austrian DTH households.
Ultra HD is also on the rise: 153,000 Austrian households had Ultra HD TV sets at the end of 2015. SES expects at least 250,000 further sets to be sold this year, leading to a total number of over 400,000 Ultra HD households at the end of 2016.
