Conax introduces Contego-as-a-Service in the cloud

Conax has announced that the company will feature its new Contego-as-a-Service cloud-based content protection service at this year’s ANGA COM in Cologne.
The flexible, modular offering includes the full benefits of the flagship Conax Contego unified security platform supporting DVB, IPTV and OTT plus all key DRM technologies enabling operators to provide streamlined consumer experience across devices and technologies.
Contego-as-a-Service provides pay-TV platforms with a business model for supporting future growth by featuring low CAPEX, reduced operational complexity, premium scalability and rapid deployment of new features such as secure TV everywhere and streamlined content delivery.
At AngaCom, content security specialist Conax will also feature demonstrations of its Conax GO Live entry-level live streaming solution including its newest features such as analytics, AirPlay and Chromecast support. Conax will also demonstrate its benchmark multi-DRM back-end throughout the show at Hall 10.2, stand # E11. Conax will be exhibiting together with Kudelski Group sisters Nagra and SmarDTV.

Conax Connected Access set to launch

Conax Connected Access multi-purpose IPTV client should launch in the next quarter, with the first commercial deployment taking place shortly afterwards.
Speaking to Broadband TV News, Tom Jahr, EVP and head of product and marketing at Conax, said the solution’s advanced hybrid approach provides a next generation, multipurpose security client safeguarding broadcast, OTT, IPTV and the connected home.
Its flexible architecture integrates CAS and DRM providing one single security client across all devices and networks.
According to Jahr, the solution based on Kudelski Group technology collaboration will be a game-changer in the IPTV business and should secure the more telco business.
He added that, along with the Conax Contego unified security hub, the Conax Contego as a Service, cloud platform will allow the company to offer customers a hosted service.
Meanwhile, Erik Andersen, director area sales, Conax, said that Conax Connected Access creates new opportunities for operators to utilise two-way IP connectivity.
The advanced two-way solution will allow for the delivery of a variety of services including catch-up and VOD and furthermore will provide operators with invaluable information about their customers.

Conax provides Android STB update

Conax expects to implement security architecture for Android STBs sometime in mid-2016.
Speaking to Broadband TV News, Tor Helge Kristiansen, EVP principal architect, said that it is currently being developed with chipset and STB vendors.
He added that the solution involves separating the broadcast and app environments within the same box, keeping the former secure while retaining openness and flexibility for the latter.
There are two options for putting Android on STBs, namely an open source model and Android TV, and Conax is working on both.
A major advantage Android has is speed of innovation.
There are some 230,000 registered Android developers and it is easy to find a team to build an app.

freeSAT opts for Conax

freeSAT by UPC DirectThe Czech and Slovak DTH platform freeSAT is set to start using conditional access supplied by Conax.
According to Parabola, it will be incorporated in HD receivers to be introduced in the market at a future date.
UPC has used several conditional access systems on its DTH platforms.
The original CryptoWorks was disconnected and replaced by Irdeto. Nagra MA is used for the operator’s HD boxes and Conax will be in its new HD receivers. The decision to opt for Conax is influenced by the fact that the system is already used by Focus Sat, UPC DTH’s leading platform in terms of subscriber numbers, in Romania.

Conax/StarTimes extend African cooperation

Conax has entered into a contract with StarTimes to co-develop a media gateway solution for its Africa operations.
In their expanded cooperation, Conax will provide StarTimes, which has over 5 million DTT and DTH subscribers in 16 countries, with security client Conax Trusted Link, security expertise and the technical blueprint for designing and deploying a complete, secure multi-room service.
The unique new “Whole Home” solution will provide an advanced service for African households, making it much easier to share live TV and PVR within the home, without needing an internet connection.
The latter is a key differentiator between the unique stand-alone Conax/StarTimes solution and traditional media gateway solutions. Delivery is planned for Q4 this year.

Conax extends executive line-up

Conax KudelskiConax has announced key strategic enhancements to its senior management.
They see Tor Helge Kristiansen, EVP principal architect and with over 20 years of experience, will hold a complementary function encompassing both a key advisory role for strategic planning, and a trigger for executing on strategy with long term global trends in mind.
He will also play a central role in technology collaboration initiatives with other Kudelski Group entities.
Meanwhile, Tom Jahr will take responsibility for Conax Marketing in his new role as EVP products & marketing.
In an additional strategic move, the company has elevated its senior regional heads, namely; Thomas Blichfeldt, Sr. VP EMEA Sales Rohit Mehra, Sr. VP Americas, and Are Mathisen, Sr. VP APAC Sales.
Earlier this year, Conax also introduced an EVP Services role to head its newly established Services Division. Erik Abrahamsen is named acting EVP Services.

Conax establishes Beijing test centre

Conax is in the final stages of establishing a Conax test centre in Beijing.
The facility will provide authorised pre-testing and conformity testing services certifying client device conformance for Conax content protection functionality requirements. Conax works closely with a wide range of STB partners and other device manufacturers to ensure Conax enabled client devices are developed according to its strict requirements for functionality and security. The new test hub extends the security provider’s current offering for 3rd party test facilities in Europe and India and aims to offer cost efficient access for set-top box manufacturers and partners in Asia Pacific.
The Conax testing facility in Beijing will be available from early May 2015.
“During the last 2 years, Conax has security integrated close to 200 STB models,” confirmed Erik Abrahamsen, acting EVP Services, Conax.
“While a very high percentage of the manufacturers are based in Asia, we are pleased to introduce a regional offering for our partners. Establishing a test center closer to our STB partners will provide flexibility and reduced costs for STB projects, benefiting both our partners and our customers – leading pay-TV operators across the globe.”

ALi Corporation, Taiwan based set-top-box chipset provider, partnered with Conax, Norway based STB manufacturer and StarTimes, digital television operator in Africa. ALi chipset solutions are integrated on Conax set-top-boxes which helps StarTimes to provide quality and affordable STB solutions in African markets.

Conax boosts Kudelski performance

The Kudelski Group has posted revenues of CHF895.1 million (€836.8 million) for 2014, a 7.1% increase on the previous year.
Its operating income and net incomes amounted to CHF68.1 million (+24.9%) and CHF50.4 million (+27.9%) respectively.
In its latest set of results, the group notes that the acquisition of Conax, the integration of which is fully on track, has provided both technology synergies as well as cross-selling opportunities for products like OpenTV5 connectware, Media Live multiscreen solutions and SmartDTV devices.
The group’s Integrated Digital TV (iDTV) revenues increased by 9.8% to CHF648.4 million in 2014, representing a 10.2% constant currency growth.
The European iDTV sector posted constant currency growth of 3.1%, while Southern European markets, including Italy, Spain and Portugal, started to recover following the decline of the previous years, increasing their revenue contribution from 2013.
With the addition of Conax, the group significantly strengthened its position in Scandinavia and in some key Eastern European markets.
However, the group’s Northern European markets experienced lower growth compared to the previous year, with the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands posting lower 2014 revenues.
The Americas region generated constant currency growth of 12.5%, with revenues reaching CHF274.7 million in 2014, while the Asia/Pacific and Africa region posted constant currency growth of 19.1%, reflecting strong momentum in the second half of the year.
Overall, operating income from the iDTV segment improved by 25.8%, reaching CHF71.8 million in 2014.

Conax makes first Nagra contribution

Kudelski HQThe Kudelski Group’s acquisition of Conax has boosted the security to technology company in the first half of the year.
A number of key initiatives have been launched that are expected to bring cost savings across the group. These include improved sourcing arrangements for smartcards and better leveraging SmarDTV’s solutions in the CAM business.
There are also plans to accelerate the cross selling of products such as TV5 connectware, MediaLive multiscreen solutions and SmarDTV devices.
The 9.5% increase in revenues, when compared to the first six months of 2014 has also been boosted by a patent cross-licence agreement with Cisco.
Kudelski Group reported operating income of CHF 27.7 million, representing growth of 79.9% over the first half 2013. Net income from continuing operations improved from CHF 10.7 million to CHF 18.3 million.
OpenTV5 deployments are progressing with the commercial launch at Starhub, Singapore in April.
A new content security solution has also gone in Israel’s HOT cable network, while the French Numericable selected NAGRA Media PRM and NAGRA Media Player SDK to enable its new Multiscreen application on Android and iOS (see separate story).

K-Vision deploys Conax’s content protection solution

Indonesia’s recently launched pay-DTH platform which is owned by Kompas Gramedia Group, K-Vision, has signed a technology deal with Norway-based TV encryption, conditional access and content security provider, Conax.
Conax will deploy Contego Plus solution to provide advanced content protection; which will enable K-Vision to monetize Fifa World Cup broadcasting rights and to deploy new services.
“The flexibility of the advanced, proven content security back-end and advisory role provided by Conax will enable K-Vision to easily grow with new business models and content package distribution technologies to further develop our business with lucrative product differentiation and advanced marketing strategies,” said Harya Pratama, Executive Director at K-Vision.
K-Vision is planning to include hybrid networks and new business models, such as multiscreen services as its business grows. K-Vision is gearing up to offer 65 international channel in SD and HD and several local channels, in addition to sports channels.

Telekom Austria selects Conax to secure new B2B satellite platform

OSLO and VIENNA — Conax, a leading global provider of solutions for securing digital video content distribution on all devices, today announced that Telekom Austria Group, a leading ICT services provider in the CEE region, has deployed a new B2B DTH satellite platform targeting Central and Eastern Europe including centralized conditional access based on Conax Contego™ Plus to ensure streamlined protection of content assets cross-platform. Conax launches cardless solution

Conax has revealed the details of its new Cardless CA solution at a press briefing at IBC.
On a roll, senior executives from the content security provider also introduced a new comprehensive global partner programme, called Conax Connect. According to Conax CEO Morten Solbakken, the company “is continuing to step up the pace of the company’s new direction with an exciting portfolio of new solutions and global initiatives.”
These include deployment of security solutions Conax Xtend Multiscreen, Conax Contego, Conax Secure Clients, and now with the further expansion of the Conax Contego client portfolio with Cardless CA for STBs. Further, with the introduction of the Conax Connect professional partner program, Conax invites partners to connect to the Conax ecosystem.

The new Cardless CA solution from Conax is expanding the Conax Contego client portfolio, meaning that smart cards and cardless can seamlessly co-exist in an operator’s ecosystem. CryptoFirewall cores are already integrated into multiple chipset platforms from leading STB chipset manufacturers and will enable wide availability of the Conax Hardware Security Core in STBs. Beyond improved security against piracy, hardened STB chipsets represent an added insurance for operators’ investment in STBs.

The new solution will complement Conax’ other Security Cores, smart cards, STB chipset solutions, as well as hardened Software Cores used in Conax DRM clients for tablets and other personal devices. Operators under high piracy pressure can for example combine the new Conax Hardware Security Core and Conax smart cards for a ‘double-hull’ effect or use it as an additional security layer in the upcoming Conax Cardless CAS.

Conax appoints Binderlehner for German-speaking countries

Conax has appointed Andreas Binderlehner as its new director of area sales for the German-speaking countries.
Binderlehner will be responsible for development of business opportunities and expansion of sales of Conax Conditional Access and DRM solutions to Cable, Satellite, DTH and DTT Operators, ISPs and telcos in the so-called D-A-CH countries.
The German-speaking countries, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, represent a highly significant market for distribution of pay-TV and Over-the-Top content with a cumulative population of over 90 million inhabitants.

Binderlehner comes from senior positions at strategic players in the market. He joins Conax from Envivio, and previously worked for Verimatrix and SeaChange.
